Exercise 1 On The Whistle

Mealtime Recall Training

Mealtime training is a fantastic way to build a positive recall, especially with young puppies. However, older dogs can also benefit from this exercise as it helps reinforce that coming back to you is rewarding and worthwhile.

Using something your dog naturally values, such as their food, allows you to create lots of successful recall repetitions in a controlled environment.

How To Practise Mealtime Recall

Step 1: Prepare Your Dog’s Meal

Have your dog’s meal ready before you begin. Make sure your dog is aware that something rewarding is about to happen.

Step 2: Get Your Dog’s Attention

Gain your dog’s attention by shaking their food bowl or preparing their meal in a way that creates interest.

You want your dog to be keen and engaged, ready to interact with you.

Step 3: Move Away And Recall

As your dog is focused on you, begin to move away from them while giving your recall command.

If you are using a whistle, use 4 or 5 gentle pips. Your whistle should sound friendly and inviting, not loud or aggressive.

Your dog should learn that your recall means coming towards you is a positive experience.

Step 4: Reward The Recall

As your dog catches up to you, mark the behaviour using your clicker or an event marker word such as “Yes” or “Good”.

Immediately put their food bowl down on the floor so they receive their reward.

Step 5: Repeat At Every Mealtime

Repeat this exercise at every mealtime to build a strong association between your recall cue and something your dog values.

Remember, recall is built through repetition and positive experiences. By making coming back to you part of your dog’s daily routine, you are creating a habit that will transfer into other environments.
