Exercise 2 Be The Leader
Building The Recall Response
This exercise begins to build the foundations of a positive recall by teaching your dog that coming back to you is rewarding, fun and worthwhile.
The aim is to create a dog that wants to return to you, rather than simply responding because they have been asked. Keep the exercise easy, positive and successful.
How To Practise
Step 1: Allow Your Dog To Explore
Start by allowing your dog to explore the area. Give them time to settle and become comfortable with their surroundings.
Step 2: Create Some Distance
Move a short distance away from your dog. At this stage, keep the distance small so your dog can easily succeed.
Step 3: Encourage Your Dog To Notice You
Wait for your dog to look towards you. Once they are aware of you, move away from them by running a short distance.
Your movement should encourage your dog to follow and engage with you.
Step 4: Add Your Recall Cue
As soon as your dog starts moving enthusiastically towards you, give your recall command.
If using a whistle, use 4 or 5 gentle pips. Remember, your whistle should sound friendly and welcoming. Avoid making it loud or sounding frustrated, as we want your dog to associate the recall cue with something positive.
Step 5: Reward The Return
As your dog runs back towards you, mark the behaviour with your clicker if you are using one.
When your dog reaches you, reward them immediately with a treat.
At this stage, use basic treats as you are building the behaviour in an easy environment.
For Puppies
With puppies, get down onto the floor when they return. Allow them to jump up and interact with you, giving plenty of fuss and praise after they have received their treat.
This helps your puppy learn that coming back to you is exciting and rewarding.
How Often To Practise
For puppies, repeat this exercise regularly until around 12 weeks old.
For older dogs, practise consistently for at least two weeks to build the habit.
The more positive repetitions your dog experiences, the stronger the recall will become. Practise every day where possible, keeping sessions short, fun and successful.
Remember, we are building a behaviour that your dog loves to perform. Make coming back to you the best choice your dog can make.
