Moving Between Placeboards

Only once you have mastered the previous exercise should you progress to recalling your dog from one placeboard to another.

This exercise builds on your dog’s understanding of the “place” cue and teaches them to confidently move between targets while staying focused and listening to you.

Begin with the two placeboards positioned close together. Ask your dog to move from one board to the other using the word “place”.

As soon as your dog reaches the new placeboard and sits, mark the behaviour with your clicker and reward.

At this stage, we are looking for your dog to understand the exercise clearly, so keep the distance short and make it easy for them to succeed.

Over a number of training sessions, gradually increase the distance between the two placeboards. Only increase the challenge when your dog is confidently completing the exercise.

If your dog becomes unsure or struggles, simply reduce the distance again and rebuild their confidence.

Remember, placeboard training is about creating clear communication and developing a dog that listens, thinks and chooses the correct behaviour. Take your time and build each step carefully.
