Stop Whistle
Stop Whistle
You may have already started conditioning your stop whistle in the previous levels. At Level Three, we are now looking to develop this further and build towards being able to stop your dog reliably at distance.
The tutorials included in this section will show you how to introduce the stop whistle, how to build the behaviour step by step and how to progress towards stopping your dog when they are further away from you.
As with all gundog training, take your time with this exercise. Your stop whistle needs to be 100% reliable before you continue to increase the distance or add distractions. A rushed stop whistle can lead to confusion, so focus on creating a clear understanding for your dog.
It is also important not to practise the stop whistle too frequently. Although repetition is important, over-practising one exercise can make your dog become “sticky” and start anticipating what is coming next. Keep your training varied and continue to mix the stop whistle into your normal sessions.
Only progress when you are confident that your dog fully understands what the whistle means and responds correctly.
We have included videos from the lower levels within this section because revisiting the foundations is always valuable. Returning to the basics will strengthen your dog’s understanding and help create a more reliable response.
Remember, great gundogs are built through clear communication, patience and consistency. Take your time and focus on building a stop whistle that you and your dog can rely on.
