Stop Whistle
Advanced Stop Whistle
By this stage of training, your stop whistle should be a reliable behaviour that your dog understands clearly.
We are now looking to bring the stop whistle into more advanced exercises and use it as an important part of your overall communication with your dog.
The stop whistle is not just a standalone exercise — it becomes a valuable tool when working at distance, giving you the ability to stop your dog, regain their attention and provide further direction.
You will now begin to introduce the stop whistle into exercises such as:
- Handling your dog onto blind retrieves
- Stopping your dog at distance before giving a direction
- Developing more advanced control during retrieving exercises
Remember, the stop whistle must remain clear and reliable. Do not rush into using it in more difficult situations before your dog fully understands what is expected.
It is also important to continue revisiting the basics. Returning to simple sit exercises keeps the behaviour strong and prevents training becoming repetitive or predictable. Mix your training up, keep it enjoyable and continue rewarding your dog for making the right choices.
A reliable stop whistle is built through consistency, patience and hundreds of successful repetitions. Continue to maintain this foundation as you progress into more advanced work.
