Memory Retrieves
Advanced Memory Retrieves
At this level, we are now looking to develop your dog’s confidence and ability with memory retrieves by gradually increasing the distance and adding more challenging elements.
A strong memory retrieve requires your dog to remember the location of a retrieve, take the correct line and trust your instructions, even when the retrieve is no longer visible.
Begin by gradually building up the distance of your memory retrieves. Only increase the distance when your dog is consistently successful and understands the exercise.
As your dog progresses, you can begin to introduce additional challenges, such as:
- Ditches
- Different terrains
- Changes in ground conditions
- More varied environments
These challenges help your dog learn that the retrieve exercise remains the same, regardless of the surroundings.
You can also begin incorporating memory retrieves into other exercises, combining the skills your dog has developed throughout the course. For example, introducing steadiness, heel work, stop whistle or directional elements alongside your memory retrieves.
Remember, every new challenge should be introduced gradually. If your dog struggles, simply reduce the distance or return to an easier version of the exercise and rebuild.
The goal is to develop a dog that confidently trusts your direction, remembers their task and works with you as a partnership.
Continue to practise in different locations and keep revisiting the foundations — they are what create a reliable advanced gundog.
