If you have been training with us since Puppy Basics, you will have heard us talk about the importance of teaching your dog the “stand” cue.
The stand is often an overlooked behaviour, but it is an incredibly useful skill for both everyday training and working situations.
At this level, we are looking at how this foundation behaviour transfers into real-life scenarios and how valuable it can be in the field.
A reliable stand gives you another way to communicate with your dog. It allows you to ask your dog to pause, remain still and listen to you without always needing to ask for a sit.
In the field, this can be particularly useful when you need your dog to stop, wait, be handled or remain steady in a situation where movement needs to be controlled.
This video demonstrates how the stand can be used practically and highlights why building these simple foundations from the beginning creates such a versatile and reliable working dog.
Remember, never underestimate the basics. The small skills you teach early on are often the ones that become the most valuable as your training progresses.
