Hunting Up

You may want to hunt your dog up, maybe on a walk to keep the dog close or when working in the field. You will either need someone to help you with this or have somewhere you can put your dog during the exercise. Sit your dog up and get someone to place balls or dummies in a small area ensuring the dog sees them going in. Then cover your dogs eyes and get your helper to remove those items. Then sit your dog facing you and use your hand low to the ground to cast your dog into hunting. We use the cue hi-lost. Make sure you are at the area. You do not want your dog running forward to it. Let the dog hold the area, don't walk forward as you will push the dog out of the area. When the dog comes out of the area place a ball or dummy in without the dog seeing so if gets a find and reward. Repeat.

Once you have your dog hunting nicely. You can begin to hunt new areas and put finds down for your dog as you move through. Always go back to the first exercise and repeat. It's always a good idea to reign your dog in. In the field they will automatically pull on so in training keep them close.
