Advanced Marked Retrieves

At this level, we are now looking to develop your dog’s confidence and ability with marked retrieves by gradually increasing the distance.

A marked retrieve relies on your dog using their memory of where the dummy has fallen, staying focused on the area and confidently taking the line you have indicated.

As you build distance, remember to increase the challenge gradually. Your dog should remain confident and successful before you move further away.

At this stage, we are also introducing more realistic working scenarios by using shot. If you have access to one and a suitable, safe location to use it, you can also introduce a dummy launcher to help develop longer marked retrieves.

When using additional equipment or introducing new levels of excitement, always ensure your dog is comfortable and understands the exercise before progressing.

Remember, a successful marked retrieve is not just about distance. We are looking for:

• A confident and straight run out
• Your dog staying focused on the marked area
• A good pick up
• A direct return
• A correct delivery back to hand

Continue to build slowly, revisit your foundations and ensure your dog remains confident throughout the exercise.

Quality always comes before distance. A shorter retrieve performed correctly will always create a stronger foundation for longer retrieves in the future.
