The Down
The Down
In this lesson, we're going to build on the down exercise you introduced in Puppy Basics by taking it into different environments, increasing the duration, and beginning to add distance.
A reliable down is a valuable exercise for every dog. For working gundogs, it teaches them to switch off and remain calm when they're not required to work. For pet dogs, it provides a useful settle behaviour at home, in cafés, when visiting friends, or whenever you need your dog to relax.
Begin by asking your dog to go into the down position as you have practised previously. Once they are lying down, wait a little longer before clicking and rewarding. Build the duration gradually over several training sessions, always setting your dog up for success.
As your dog's understanding improves, begin practising in a variety of locations. Dogs don't automatically transfer their learning from one environment to another, so proofing the behaviour in different places is an essential part of the training process.
Only introduce distance once your dog can confidently remain in the down for the required duration. Increase either duration, distance or distraction—never all three at the same time.
Remember, less is more. Keep your sessions short, finish on a positive note, and allow your dog time to build confidence before progressing.
