This lecture is for those who haven't started at Puppy basics and missed the beginnings of heelwork.

At this stage we are just conditioning the puppy to be at the side of you. It doesn't matter which side, just pick a side and make sure you stick to it. If you keep swapping you will only confuse your puppy. Once the lead is on, let it trail so the dog gets used to it and reward it when it is in the correct place. Your puppy will soon work out that it gets rewarded at your side. If you are kibble feeding your puppy you can hand feed it's meals like this. That way you are conditioning this three times a day. DO NOT say heel at any point yet; the dog doesn't know where that is and you will end up conditioning the wrong position.
