Introducing the stop whistle
Introduction to the Stop Whistle
The stop whistle is one of the most important tools in gundog training. It gives you a way to communicate with your dog at distance and allows you to stop and regain control when your dog is working away from you.
The tutorials in this section will show you how to begin teaching the stop whistle, how to build the behaviour step by step, and eventually how to develop your dog's ability to stop reliably at distance.
Take your time with this exercise. A reliable stop whistle is not built in a few training sessions — it requires patience, repetition and a clear understanding from your dog.
Your aim is to achieve a 100% reliable stop whistle before progressing to more advanced exercises. However, be careful not to practise it too much in isolation. Overworking the stop whistle can make your dog anticipate the command and become "sticky", meaning they may slow down or hesitate in their work because they are expecting to be stopped.
Remember to mix your training up. Include the stop whistle as part of a wider training session alongside retrieves, heelwork and other exercises, rather than making every session about stopping your dog.
Only progress once you are confident that your dog fully understands the exercise and responds correctly.
We have included videos from the lower levels within this section because revisiting the foundations is always valuable. These exercises are important building blocks, and going back to basics is never a step backwards — it is how we strengthen the finished behaviour.
As always, less is more. Take your time, build confidence, and create a stop whistle that your dog understands and responds to reliably.
